Haidakhan Wale Baba lived in the Himalayan foothills during the 19th century and the early part of the 20th century in a region called Kumaon which has been the birthplace of numerous spiritual masters. He was first seen by several witnesses near the small village of Haidakhan around the year 1800, appearing in a ball of light, and He disappeared in 1922 in a ball of light in view of a few of His disciples. Numerous miracles and extraordinary events were attributed to Him. He was acknowledged as being Shiva Mahavatar Baba, an eternal manifestation of God in human form, the incarnation of Lord Shiva, and He is thought to have manifested in physical form at regular intervals throughout history when His intervention on the physical plane was necessary. In the 1950s He became known in the West as « Mahavatar Babaji » after publication of Autobiography of a Yogi by Paramahansa Yogananda and the introduction of Kriya Yoga in the West. ··· |

Earlier in this century, Babaji´s return to earth in human form was predicted by Mahendra Baba, a saint and prophet who spent his lifetime travelling throughout India preaching and preparing for Babaji´s return. He announced that for the first time Babaji would make Himself known to many and that people from all nationalities, classes and religions would come to him. Mahendra Baba left his body in June 1969, exactly one year before Babaji´s return. ··· |

At the foot of Mount Kailash, a mountain in the Himalayas considered to be the dwelling place of God since the earliest times, Babaji appeared in June 1970 in a cave beside the Gautama Ganga river opposite the village of Haidakhan. His appearance was that of a young man of about 20 years of age -the form of the eternal youth in which He has been revered throughout the ages. Shri Babaji established a beautiful spiritual ashram at Haidakhan and another at Chilianaula, overlooking the Himalayas, near the town of Ranikhet. He has drawn people to Him from everywhere in the world through dreams, visions and through special circumstances. He came to re-establish the Sanatan Dharma - the eternal religion on which all faiths are based and whose teaching can be summarized in three words : Truth, Simplicity and Love. He taught that repetition of the name of God in the form of the mantra « Om Namaha Shivaya » ~ « I surrender to God » ~ was one of the highest forms of devotion and encouraged those who came to him to practice Karma Yoga - any work dedicated to God. He left His body on St Valentine´s day, February 14th 1984, having given His heart to humanity. ··· |

Before He left, Babaji designated one of his closest disciples, Muniraji, to succeed Him in the leadership of the ashrams, the Chilianaula´s hospital and the indian SAMAJ. Now he still represents Babaji and give his blessing for opening ceremonies of new centers or ashrams in the West. Many continue to be drawn to Babaji to receive His blessing and make the pilgrimage to Haidakhan. Books about Him are available in many languages, and many spiritual centres in the West have been dedicated to Babaji and his teachings.

RL : Muniraj, when did you meet Babaji ?
M : (Muniraj, as interpreted by Gauradevi.) The first time I saw Babaji, I met Him in the Kathgaria Ashram, close to Haldwani. Yet, I knew of Babaji before, when I was in the hospital and had to undergo an operation in 1960. Then Babaji gave darshan to me in the hospital. Then Babaji pulled me to Haidakhan in 1971.
RL : And was that the first time you went to Haidakhan and what was your experience ?
M : Yes, it was my first time there and it was wonderful. I had the feeling that I had been in Haidakhan before - I knew the place from before, that was the feeling.
RL : When Babaji appeared to you in the hospital, did you know he was your Guru ?
M : That time I was in the hospital, I did not realize that it was Babaji that appeared to me. But when I met Babaji in the physical body, I realized that it was the same Being whom I had met before in the hospital, the night before the operation.
RL : Can you give me a very strong experience you had with Babaji ?
M : After I met Babaji, I had different visions of Him, like seeing different forms of the Divine and like seeing His form change. The strongest feeling I had was the feeling of having been with Babaji probably for many lifetimes. I felt this connection, the feeling of this old, ancient connection.
RL : And why do you think Baba came into manifestation this last time ?
M : One of the main things is that He taught people to repeat the OM NAMAH SHIVAYA mantra, and now this mantra is spread all over the earth. And then He taught people to live in Truth, Simplicity and Love, and to lead their lives according to these principles. Also He told people that in this yuga, this time, the highest form of yoga is karma yoga.
RL : And how do you see people doing after Babaji left his body ?
M : I don´t have any feeling that Babaji is gone. There is no AFTER Babaji to me. And all the centers and ashrams running all over the world nowadays, they are all running because of Babaji´s inspiration.
RL : And even when the ashrams have difficult times, still, they should keep running and doing their work ?
M : It is normal to have difficulties, always difficulties come and difficulties go. The difficulties make us stronger; they always teach us something.
RL : What advice would you give people ?
M : People should go on according to the teachings that they got from Babaji, and the main teaching is karma yoga. And also, one of the main principles of Babaji is to be human. Also, He never taught us to quit our religion. He always taught us that every religion has the same value.
When people really love Babaji and really have this connection with Him, they can never really have difficulties or problems. When they have devotion and love for Babaji, they can never be really in trouble. All the new people who are coming now, Baba keeps giving them strong experiences.
RL : Why did Babaji leave you in this role ?
M : This I don´t know. I am trying my best to do the duty that Babaji has given me, and what ever is going on, what ever is happening, is always because of Baba´s constant inspiration.
RL : Muniraj, you do your particular spiritual practice every morning and evening: puja, fire ceremony, aarati, japa, meditation; is this a very important way to stay in close connection with Babaji ?
M : Yes, because whichever practice you do, this is creating a link with the divine.
RL : There are new people who come to the Ashram who don´t have a spiritual practice, and want to learn one. They are coming to aarati and doing karma yoga, what else would you recommend ?
M : In the beginning, just teach them in a simple way: japa (repetition of the name), meditation, spiritual reading.
RL : You also read the Sapta Sati every morning and evening, is this a good thing ?
M : Yes, it is for Goddess. You know, each practice corresponds to a spiritual stage, so whichever practice you do, this creates a certain spiritual stage in your life. Reading the Sapta Sati is to create a connection with the Divine Mother.

Sri Maha Munirajji made the following pronouncement:

I am about to give you good news about Babaji, news that you have all been
waiting a long time for.
It is my belief that Shri Babaji is Lord Shiva Himself and that Lord Shiva
appears in the universe as and when the need arises.
In fact Babaji said all religions in the world are one and have come about
with the inspiration of the Lord
Babaji has already assumed his new form in the material world and can appear
anywhere as per his wish!
We all ardently wish that Babaji appears again in Haidakhan Vishwa Mahadam.
For this to happen, we all need to engage in Om Namaha Shivaya Jappa and Kirtan
constantly and continuously with great purity and ardent devotion.
Babaji is going to bring about great disruptive upheavals in the world as
he had already pronounced and he will protect his ardent and sincere devotees,
as He is only hungry for True Devotion!
Great upheavals and disruptive changes are a certainty and in fact have already
been set in motion.
You all must be aware of recent upheavals in Russia with the fires and similar
calamities have occurred in China, India, Pakistan and many other countries;
floods, tsunami’s, draughts, and economic upheavals around the world.
Only Babaji is able to protect us from all these calamities. Progress
And nature involves constant change. We must not therefore be afraid of these
occurrences.
To protect ourselves from all these upheavals we need to engage in continuous
and constant Bhajan and jappa while we carry on with our duties and Karma
yoga.
The proof of all the above will be evident as the future unfolds.
Bhole Baba Ki Jai !
Commentary :
After the evening Darshan many devotees were understandably excited and the
message that our beloved Babaji had manifested a body began traveling throughout
the world.
Among the immediate reactions devotees expressed were to sell there homes
quit there jobs etc….
This is not what Munirajji had intended and he gave the following commentary:
Do not get over excited, God decides when, where and to whom He will appear.
Babaji himself had said when returns he will appear to the multitudes.
We have only to purify our hearts and develop the longing for him to return.
This is not a call to change your life but to deepen your devotion, to increase
your spiritual practice so that our devotion like a magnet will call the Lord
to us. If we are truly praying from our heart then Babaji can appear at any
time to any individual, He might come in a dream, vision or in a physical
body
Babaji himself will decide how and when to appear and He himself will guide
us in our lives.
This is a message of hope and encouragement, that Babaji is present and may
anytime decide to appear to us.
